ALDRICHES, TURNERS WIN MIXED TEAM TITLES

Jim and Donna Turner won the Husband/Wife Division in the Minnesota Mixed Team Championship for the second year in a row Thursday, and their victory at Forest Hills Golf Club had a familiar look to it.

Just as they did last year at Brackett's Crossing, the Turners broke away from the pack with the only sub-70 score of the second round. This time, it was a 67, which gave them a total of 137 for the 36-hole tournament, and a six-shot margin over the runner-up team of Dave and Claudia Pilot.

The Pilots' 73 was the next-best score in the division Thursday, and they finished at 143. Mark and Deb Hayes, who were tied with the Turners and the Pilots at the start of the day, shot a 74 and finished third with a 144

The Blanchards, Paul and Nancy (formerly Nancy Harris, she won five Women's State Amateur championships), claimed fourth place at 147 (73-74).

In the Mixed Team Division, Mark Aldrich and his sister Betsy Aldrich shot a 69 Thursday to finish the regulation portion of the competition in a three-way tie for first place at 134, and they won a playoff with a birdie on the third extra hole.

Ross Hammann and Olivia Lansing followed an opening round of 66 with a 68 for their 134. This was the second time in nine days that Lansing has nearly won an MGA crown. She combined with Chelsea Gannon to take second place in the Minnesota Women's Four-Ball Championship last week. 

Hammann distinguished himself earlier in the month as the only amateur to qualify for the Nationwide Tour's Showdown at Somerby.

Finishing third were John Anderson and Hillary Gerster (68-66--134)

Trent Peterson, the former state high school champ from Eagan, and Holly Opatz wound up one stroke out of the playoff in fourth place, with a 68-67--135.

Mike Fiedler, who combined with Laura Olin to win the Mixed Team title last year, tied for fifth this year. He and Christine Herzog shot 137 (68-69), and that matched the total posted  by John Scanlon and Paige Bromen.
