Big Day for Big Ten: Illinois & OSU's Wallin Lead; Warian Makes Cut Easily

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- The soon-to-be extinct Pac 12 claimed half of the spots in the quarterfinals and all four of the spots in the semifinals last week at the the NCAA Women's Division I Championships. Stanford ended up winning the title, defeating UCLA 3-2 in the final. The score looked close, but the Cardinal never really had what you would call a close match.

This week, it appears to be the Big Ten's turn. Illinois is leading the team competition in the Men's Division I Championships with one round remaining in the stroke-play portion of the tournament. The Illini put together the low team score of the day on Sunday, a 282, and they now lead second-place Virginia by six strokes, 862 to 868. Max Herendeen, a freshman who took medalist honors in the Stanford Regional earlier this month, is leading the way for Illinois once again. He shot a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday and is tied for fourth individually at 214.

Just one stroke behind him is Tyler Goecke, a fifth-year senior who transfered from Wright State last fall. He matched the day's lowest round, a 69, and is tied for seventh at 215.

Ohio State senior Adam Wallin is first in the individual standings. He, like Goecke, shot 69, which gave him a 54-hole total of 211 (5 under). The Buckeyes are fifth as a team with a three-day tab of 877.

There was a cut after Sunday's round. Actually, there were two cuts. The number of teams that will still be playing Monday has been reduced from 30 to 15, and only nine individuals not on teams that made the cut will continue. Among them is Ben Warian, the Minnesota senior from Stillwater. He is tied for 12th overall, after turning in an even-par 72 for the third day in a row. Warian made three birdies and three bogeys in the first round, but in each of the last two rounds he had only one birdie and one bogey.

On Sunday , he started on the 10th hole and made his bogey at the daunting, 514-yard, par-4 14th. He made his one birdie at the 203-yard, par-3 eighth.
