SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Paul Barjon didn't play like someone who started the week No. 147 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List. The 28-year-old Frenchman, a former TCU All-American, grabbed a share of the lead in the Memorial Health Championship with a 9-under-par 62 on Friday in the second round at Pioneer Creek Country Club. A 66 on Saturday gave him sole possession of first place, and he birdied five of the first seven holes on Sunday. His only bogey came at the 229-yard, par-3 17th, the hardest hole on the course, but he was able to par the water-logged 436-yard, par-4 18th, and with that, he secured the victory -- not to mention $180,000.
His final-round 65 gave him a 72 hole total of 258. So now Barjon is No. 28 on the points list, and if he can stay in the top 30 for the remainder of the 2023 Korn Ferry schedule -- there are 10 more tournaments -- he will graduate to the PGA Tour for next year.
Jackson Suber started the final round in sixth place and didn't look as though he was going to move up after parring the first four holes. But he birdied five of the next six holes -- and made two eagles on the back nine before he, too, bogeyed the daunting 17th. He signed for a 62, which was almost good enough to get him into a playoff with Barjon. As it was, he ended up one stroke behind, in second place at 259. That was good enough to move Suber up 31 spots on the points list, to 22nd.
Tom Whitney conjured up the low round of the week, a 61, and that enabled him to finish alone in third at 260.
The player who is now on the bubble -- No. 30 on the points list -- is Frankie Capan, the former MGA Player of the Year from North Oaks. He went 62-64 on Friday and Saturday, which lifted him up into sole possession of second place with one round to go, but he got off to a slow start on Sunday. The good that he did by making birdies at the third and sixth holes was undone by a double bogey at the par-4 eighth (399 yards). He rallied with four birdies on the back nine, however, and finished with a 67.That put hiim in sole possession of fourth place at 261, which was worth $45,000.
Capan has now made $168,163 in the 13 Korn Ferry tournaments he's played in this year. That also ranks 30th.
