DULUTH, Minn. – Facing a three-stroke deficit heading into Wednesday’s final round, Don Berry carded a 1-under par 70 to claim his first Minnesota Senior PGA Professional Championship at Northland Country Club.
Berry, Edinburgh USA, began his final round with back-to-back birdies to quickly fall to 2-under for the championship and continued to cruise through the opening nine as he rolled in seven consecutive pars to remain at 2-under through nine.
With a bogey on the 10th, Berry slipped back to 1-under but regained a stroke by making birdie on the following hole.
Berry’s third birdie of the round put him at 3-under par, but two bogeys over the final three holes put him at 1-over for the championship, giving him a two-stroke victory at 141.
Tuesday’s opening round leader, Dale Jones, fired a 4-over par 75 during the final round to finish in second place at 143.
A bogey on the third hole put Jones at 2-under for the championship, but he would fall to even par after back-to-back bogeys at the eighth and ninth holes.
Jones continued to stumble on the final nine holes as bogeys at the 10th and 12th dropped him to 2-over, but he would limit the damage and roll in five consecutive pars before making birdie on the final hole to finish in second place, carding a 3-over par 75 on the final day.
Bump Werness, Golf Galaxy, and Mike Barge, Hazeltine National Golf Club, finished tied for third place at 5-over par 147, while Bill Isrealson, Vintage at Staples, finished fifth at 148 after carding an even par 71 Wednesday.
