MEDINA, Minn. – At last year’s Minnesota Senior Open at Minnesota Valley Country Club, Minnesota Golf Hall of Famer, Don Berry, finished in a tie for third place to end a string of four consecutive victories at the event.
Determined to begin a new winning streak, Berry carded a 4-under par 68 Tuesday during the final round of this year’s championship to cruise to a nine-shot victory, his fifth in six years.
Berry opened with a 5-under par 67 Monday, taking a one-shot advantage to the final round and stumbled early with a pair of bogeys at the third and fourth holes. He would turn at even par following a pair of birdies at the sixth and ninth holes.
Giving back a stroke with a bogey at the 13th, Berry answered by rolling in a short birdie putt at the 14th. He would get to 6-under for the championship after converting his birdie from 10 feet at the par-4 16th before holing out for eagle at the par-4 17th.
Berry added one last birdie on the final hole for good measure as he played his final five holes at 5-under par to finish eight shots better than Mike Barge at 9-under par 135.
Barge opened the championship with a 3-over par 75 Monday but bounced back with a 3-under par 69 during the final round, putting four birdies on his scorecard with one bogey. With the second-place finish Tuesday, Barge finished on top of the 60-64 Division at even par 144.
