CHOUDRANT, La. – Despite being 3-down with five holes to play, former University of Minnesota women’s golfer Paige Bromen staged a late comeback, but lost her quarterfinal match to Christina Proteau in extra holes at the 2015 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Squire Creek Country Club.
Proteau took a 2-up lead after three holes before Bromen rolled in her birdie chance at the fourth.
Bromen evened the match at the sixth with a par, but the Canadian came firing back with consecutive birdies to win the seventh and eighth holes to regain a 2-up lead.
Cutting into Proteau’s lead with a birdie at the ninth, Bromen pulled within one but would slip up at the par-5 11th, carding double-bogey to remain two back of Proteau.
Taking advantage of a late bogey by Bromen at the 13th, Proteau took a seemingly commanding 3-up lead with just five holes to play, but Bromen came surging back to win three consecutive holes to even the match through 16.
Both players would par the final two holes of regulation and the par-4 first hole before Proteau dropped her birdie putt at the par-5 second hole to claim a 1-up victory in 20 holes.
Bromen, Minneapolis, Minn., finished the first two rounds of stroke play at 19-over par 163 to qualify for match play one stroke inside the cut line.
During the Round of 64, Bromen edged fellow Minnesotan Olivia Herrick, 1-up, before slipping past Kansas native, Lacy Shelton, 2 and 1.
Bromen downed Kristin Paulson, Pella, Iowa, 3 and 2, Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals before losing to Proteau, 1-up, Wednesday.
