Burnham 27th to Open U.S. Women's Amateur; Chanhassen's Lervick Shoots 77

August 7, 2017 | 2 min.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Carding three bogeys on her opening nine Monday at San Diego Country Club, Minnesotan Sarah Burnham came back with a pair of birdies over her final nine holes to begin the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship with a round of 1-over par 73.

Burnham, of Maple Grove, Minn., will begin Tuesday’s second round in a tie for 27th, while fellow Minnesotan Brenna Lervick shot an opening-round 77 to sit in a tie for 94th following the first day of competition.

Starting her first round on the 10th tee Monday, Burnham carded a bogey on the opening hole and added a second at the par-3 13th. She would card consecutive pars before turning at 3-over with a bogey at the 18th.

The soon-to-be senior at Michigan State University built some momentum with four pars to begin her back nine before sinking her birdie chance at the par-4 fifth. Taking advantage of the par-5 eighth, Burnham rolled in her second birdie of the round and would finish the day at 73.

Burnham has qualified for three straight U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships, with her best performance coming in 2014 at Nassau Country Club in New York, where she advanced to the match play portion of the tournament, dropping her opening match.

Californian Haley Moore and Texas native Kristen Gillman each carded rounds of 5-under par 67 Monday to lead the field of 156 players after 18 holes of play. Lervick, Chanhassen, Minn., began her first round on the 10th tee Monday and carded a pair of bogeys on her front nine before struggling on her back nine, going 4-over in a span of three holes.

She rebounded by carding her lone birdie of the round at the par-3 sixth to finish the day on a positive note, shooting 5-over par 77 and into a tie for 94th.

Graduating from the University of South Dakota this spring, Lervick holds the program record for career scoring average at 76.36, winning three collegiate events.

The second round of the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship gets underway at 9 a.m. Tuesday at San Diego Country Club. Burnham begins her second round at 9:40 a.m., while Lervick gets her round started at 2:10 p.m.
