CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Facing an early deficit Wednesday during the opening round of match play at the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, Minnesotan Sarah Burnham rallied to win her opening round match, while fellow Minnesotan Brenna Lervick faltered with a string a late bogeys and was eliminated during the Round of 64 at San Diego Country Club.
Burnham looked to advance beyond the Round of 32 for the first time in four attempts Wednesday, but despite taking a birdie at the par-5 second, Wijaya carded an eagle, grabbing the early lead before Burnham came back to even the match at the fourth. She would then card a pair of birdies at the sixth and seventh holes to take a 2-up advantage.
Capitalizing on a bogey by Burnham at the eighth, Wijaya narrowed Burnham’s margin before drawing even with a birdie at the par-3 11th.
Wijaya took her first lead of the match at the par-5 14th with a par, but Burnham answered by winning the 15th and 16th holes and the two would halve the final two holes, giving Burnham a 1-up victory.
Lervick, Chanhassen, Minn., took a quick 2-up lead following a pair of birdies to open the first round of match play Wednesday, but her opponent, Lilia Kha-Tu Vu, came back to win three of the next four holes to swing momentum in her favor. Answering by carding a birdie at the par-4 ninth Lervick evened the match, but bogeyed the ensuing hole to give Kha-Tu Vu the lead for good.
Carding three consecutive bogeys starting at the 12th, Lervick fell down four before Kha-Tu Vu clinched the match with a par at the 15, 4 and 3.
Burnham, Maple Grove, Minn., will face Lervick’s opponent Kha-Tu Vu during the Round of 32, scheduled to begin at 9:50 a.m. Thursday at San Diego Country Club.
