GLEN COVE, N.Y. – After finishing tied for 15th during the qualifying rounds at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, Minnesotan Sarah Burnham was eliminated during the opening round of match play Wednesday at Nassau Country Club.

Burnham, Wayzata, Minn., faced Canadian Augusta James during the Round of 64 Wednesday and quickly fell 1-down after James birdied the opening hole.

Burnham evened the match on the sixth hole making par while James made bogey, but James would take a 2-up lead soon after with birdies on the eighth and ninth holes.

Taking advantage of back-to-back bogeys by James at the 11th and 12th holes, Burnham squared the match after rolling in consecutive pars.

James birdied the 373-yard 13th hole to take her third lead of the match before Burnham answered with a birdie on the 14th to keep the match even.

Burnham would falter late as a bogey on the 15th hole, gave James another 1-up lead before Burnham bogeyed the final hole, with James clinching the match with par.
