CHULA VISTA, Calif. – A day after eliminating Minnesotan Brenna Lervick to open match play at the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, Lilia Kha-Tu Vu came from behind to defeat another Minnesotan, Sarah Burnham, during the Round of 32 Thursday at San Diego Country Club.
Burnham edged Tatiana Wijaya to begin match play Wednesday and jumped out an early 2-up lead on Vu through four holes Thursday. Vu rolled in a pair of birdies at the fifth and seventh holes to even the match, but Burnham struck back with a birdie at the par-5 eighth to regain the lead.
Winning the 11th and 12th holes, Vu captured the lead, but Burnham answered late by carding a birdie at the 15th to even the match. Taking advantage of a bogey by Burnham at the 17th, Vu earned a 1-up victory after the two each made par on the final hole.
Burnham, Maple Grove, Minn., qualified for her fourth consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, and Thursday’s loss during the Round of 32 is her best performance to date. She enters her senior season at Michigan State University this fall with two collegiate victories to her credit.
