JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Eight Minnesotans qualified for the 114th U.S. Amateur Championship and after Tuesday’s second round, all eight players will be head home, unable to qualify for the match play portion of the championship beginning Wednesday at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Cody Seal, Victoria, Minn., narrowly missed qualifying for match play as he carded a 1-over par 73 during the final round Tuesday to finish at 5-over par, missing the cut by three strokes.
During his final round on the Riverside Course, Seal began with a bogey on the opening hole before rebounding with a birdie on the third. He would cruise over the next eight holes before a bogey at the 12th put him back at 1-over for the day.
Seal rolled in a birdie at the par-4 14th before a pair of bogeys at the 15th and 17th dropped him to 2-over on the round. He would finish strong as he made a birdie on the final hole to shoot 73 and finish the championship at 5-over par 148.
Sammy Schmitz, Farmington, Minn., led the group from Minnesota after carding a 1-under par 71 during Monday’s opening round. Schmitz played the Highlands Course during the second round Tuesday and couldn’t get things going, making five bogeys with one birdie during the opening nine.
Over the final nine holes, Schmitz would roll in two bogeys and a double-bogey before finishing with a birdie on the final hole to card a 7-over par 78 during the final round, missing the cut at 6-over par 149.
Sam Matthew, Roseville, Minn., carded a 1-over par 72 during the opening round before getting off to a slow start to Tuesday’s second round.
Matthew, the 2013 MGA Amateur Champion, began on the tenth hole of the Riverside Course with back-to-back bogeys before another string of bogeys put him at 5-over through nine holes.
On his back nine, Matthew fell to 7-over for the tournament with a bogey on the fourth before rolling in birdie at the sixth. A bogey on the eighth hole put Matthew back at 7-over par where he would finish the tournament, missing the cut by five shots.
Andrew McCain’s 1-over par 73 Tuesday on the Riverside Course wasn’t good enough to put him through to match play as McCain carded a 7-over par 78 the day before.
McCain, Minneapolis, Minn., began on the tenth hole and started slow with a double-bogey but would go 3-under over the next 12 hole before a triple-bogey at the par-4 seventh hole all but ended his chances of moving on. McCain birdied the final hole to finish at 8-over par 151.
Colton Buege, Rogers, Minn., and Minnesota Gopher Jon DuToit, Chaska, Minn., also missed the cut Tuesday as both finished the opening rounds at 9-over par 152.
Hudson Carpenter, Stillwater, Minn., carded a 4-over par 75 during the opening round Monday and followed it with an 81 Tuesday to finish the championship at 13-over par 156, while Brandon Sletmoen, Dilworth, Minn., followed his opening round of 75 with an 83 Tuesday to finish at 15-over par 158.
Lee McCoy, Clarkesville, Ga., and Taylor Moore, Edmond, Okla., shared medalist honors Tuesday as both finished on top of the leaderboard at 8-under par 135, while five players tied for third at 138.
After the conclusion of Tuesday’s second round, 60 players were seeded in the Round of 64 bracket with four spots yet to be determined. A playoff for the four final spots is scheduled early Wednesday as 17 players finished Tuesday’s second round tied for 61st at 2-over par 145.
