Gopher Men Climb to 14th at Windsong; Freshman Vining Moves Inside Top-5

INDEPENDECE, Minn. -- The University of Minnesota men's golf team completed the second round early Monday and fired a team score of 299 to move up to 14th place after 36 holes.

For the second consecutive round, sophomore Riley Johnson, Fargo, N.D., paced the Gophers as he finished the second round, shooting 3-over par 74.

Jon DuToit, Grady Meyer and Jose Mendez all carded rounds of 4-over par 75 during the second round to help Minnesota climb the leaderboard early Monday.

Playing as an individual, Gopher freshman Tom Vining moved inside the top-5 after 36 holes as he sits tied for fourth at even par 143.

Vining, Sioux Falls, S.D., fired a 2-over par 73 during his first collegiate round early Sunday and followed it with a 1-under par 70 during the afternoon session, carding three birdies over the final five holes.

The University of Oklahoma finished its second round carding the lowest round of the tournament, firing a 284 to take a sizable 12-shot lead into the final round.

Through two rounds the Sooners have been led by Luke Kwon who carded rounds of 70 and 69, respectively, taking a one-stroke lead over the individual field at 3-under par 139.

The 2015 Gopher Invitational concludes Monday as the final round is scheduled for a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. at Windsong Farm.
