INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The 2015 Gopher Invitational marks the beginning of the 2015-2016 season for University of Minnesota men’s golf team, but with three teams remaining on the golf course during the second round Sunday, play was suspended due to darkness at Windsong Farm.
A total of 12 players had yet to complete 36 holes Sunday when play was suspended as the second round is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. Monday before a shotgun start to the final round, scheduled to begin at approximately 9:15 a.m.
The Gophers got off to a poor start Sunday, carding a team score of 310 during the opening round, putting them in last place after 18 holes.
Jon DuToit, the 2015 Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Champion, fired an opening-round 80 along with Jose Mendez, who won the 2013 Big Ten Championship as a freshman.
Gophers Riley Johnson and Grady Meyer, both Fargo, N.D., natives, led the way during the opening round as both carded rounds of 4-over par 75 Sunday.
A bright spot for the Gophers during the opening round Sunday was the play of freshman Tom Vining who fired a 1-under par 70 as Vining will compete as an individual during the Gophers’ only home tournament.
Iowa State University carded a team score of 287 during the opening round Sunday to take an early one-stroke lead over the University of Oklahoma, but the Cyclones would shoot a team score of 302 during the second round fall into a tie for fourth place currently, with the second round yet to be completed.
