ST. PAUL, Minn. – Shooting a 1-under par 72 Monday, PGA professional Lisa Grimes leads the field by two strokes at the 2014 Minnesota Women’s State Open to put herself in good position to win her fourth championship.
Grimes, Alexandria Golf Club, started on the tenth hole with a bogey Monday, but rebounded with back-to-back birdies at the 12th and 13th to quickly drop to 1-under.
She would make another bogey on the 17th before making birdie on the 18th to remain at 1-under for the day.
The three-time champion, Grimes, fell back to even par with a bogey on the first hole but finished her day with eight solid holes as she would make one birdie and seven pars to finish the opening round in the lead at 72.
Grimes won her first championship in 2004 and became the first woman with multiple titles as she won again in 2006, before taking the 2012 trophy a third time. Katie Bakken is the only other player with multiple victories, winning in 2001 and 2007.
Sara Detlefsen, Somerby Golf Club, will begin the final round Tuesday two shots behind Grimes as Detlefsen carded a 1-over par 74 Monday.
Detlefsen rolled in a pair of birdies on the opening nine holes with one birdie to make the turn at 1-over par.
She would make two bogeys early on the back nine to drop to 1-over par before rolling in another birdie at the 15th. With a bogey on the 17th, Detlefsen would finish her day in second place at 74.
Brenna Lervick, Island View Golf Club, carded a 2-over par 75 Monday and will need to make up three strokes to catch Grimes during the final round.
Fresh off her Minnesota Women’s State Match Play Championship Wednesday, McKenzie Neisen, New Prague Golf Club, fired a 3-over par 76 Monday and sits tied for fourth with professional Martha Nause, four shots off the lead.
