Herrick and Klasse Qualify for Match Play at U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur

  NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Minnesotans Olivia Herrick and Leigh Klasse are among the 64 players who qualified for match play at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Sunday at Harbour Trees Golf Club.

Herrick, Roseville, Minn., carded a 6-over par 78 during the final round of qualifying Sunday to finish tied for 12th at 154 after opening the tournament with a 76 the day before.

During her final round, Herrick got off to a very slow start with a double-bogey on the opening hole and followed it with two consecutive bogeys to fall to 4-over on the day through four holes.

After three consecutive bogeys, Herrick rolled in her first birdie of the day on the last hole of her front nine to make the turn at 6-over par.

Herrick would make two birdies with two more bogeys over the final nine holes to remain at 6-over for the round and finish the opening rounds of qualifying at 154.

She is making her second straight appearance at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur as she qualified for the tournament in just her first year of eligibility a year ago, getting eliminated during the Round of 32.

Herrick is seeded No. 15 for match play and will face Amy Loughney, Hoboken, N.J. Monday at 11 a.m.

Klasse, St. Anthony, Minn., began the championship with an 8-over over par 80 Saturday and answered with a 4-over par 76 Sunday to qualify for match play tied for 19th at 156.

During her final round Sunday, Klasse carded a double-bogey on her opening hole to quickly fall to 2-over on the day before rolling in two more bogeys, making the turn at 4-over.

Klasse found a groove over the final nine holes as she rolled in a birdie on her 10th hole before rolling in seven straight pars. With a bogey on the final hole, Klasse carded a 156 to advance to match play for the ninth time in her storied career.

Klasse is the No. 21 seed for match play and will face 44th-ranked Alyssa Roland, New York, N.Y., during the Round of 64, which is scheduled for Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Claudia Pilot, Lake Shore, Minn., carded a 12-over par 84 during the opening round Saturday and recorded an identical score during the final round Sunday to miss the cut by five strokes, while Rochester, Minn., native Eleanor Layton missed the cut as well, shooting 90-86—176.
