MEDINA, Minn. – Just four months after competing at the inaugural U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Oregon, Olivia Herrick and Samantha Sommers carded a 2-under par 70 Wednesday at Medina Golf and Country Club to earn a trip back to the national championship next spring.
A field of nine teams competed for one qualifying spot to next season’s championship, which will be played May 21-25 at the Streamsong Resort in Streamsong, Fla.
Herrick, Roseville, Minn., and Sommers, St. Cloud, Minn., played the front nine at 1-under par Wednesday as the two carded a birdie at the par-5 second hole before getting to 2-under with a birdie at the 11th.
The pair would give back a stroke with a bogey at the par-3 13th, but responded with back-to-back birdies at the 15th and 16th holes to move to 3-under par.
A bogey on the final hole of the day proved to be inconsequential as Herrick and Sommers carded a 2-under par 70 to earn medalist honors and claim the lone qualifying position by one stroke.
Despite finishing as first alternates during the qualifier a year ago at StoneRidge Golf Club, Herrick and Sommers were invited to the championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon Dunes, Ore., carding a 141 during the first two rounds to qualify for match play.
Plainfield, Ind., native Julie Carmichael, who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Tuesday, and playing partner, Mary Jane Hiestand, Naples, Fla., finished as first alternates after carding a round of 1-under par 71 Wednesday.
Stephanie Herzog and Sophia Yoemans, teammates at Red Wing High School, carded an even par 72 Wednesday to finish as second alternates.
