COON RAPIDS, Minn. – Luke Johanson shot an opening round 3-under par 69 Wednesday at the 2013 Minnesota Public Golf Association Junior Public Links Championship at Bunker Hills Golf Club, and went on to defeat defending champion Morgan Rask by five strokes.
The field played an 18-hole opening round with the top 12 players, plus ties, advancing to a final nine-hole round.
After the first 18 holes, Johanson stood at 3-under par and went on to shoot even par 36 on the final nine holes to finish 3-under par 105, five strokes better than his nearest competitor.
Rask finished second carding a first-round 2-over par 74 and responded with an even par 36 to finish at 110.
“I played alright,” Rask said after his first round. “The putter really saved me. I had a lot of long par putts that I was lucky to make.”
Rask won the tournament in a playoff a year ago when it was held at Keller Golf Club in St. Paul, Minn.
Sam Steinwand shot an even par 72 during the opening round before finishing with a 4-over par 40 to end his day at 4-over par 112.
“This is my home course, so I’m happy with the way I played,” Steinwand said after the opening round. “I didn’t start good. I had a bogey on the first hole but knew there was a lot of golf left.”
Steinwand rebounded with a birdie on the fourth and fifth holes and made the turn at 1-under par 35. He got the putter going early as he made six consecutive one-putts on the first nine holes.
“I hit the driver a lot better on the back nine,” he said. “I hit more fairways and greens, but the greens sped up on the back nine and I had a few three-putts.”
Five players finished tied for fourth at 113.
