NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carding a final-round 72 Sunday at Hillwood Country Club, Minnesotan Leigh Klasse finished the first two rounds of the 2015 U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Championship tied for sixth to advance to match play for the sixth consecutive year.
Fellow Minnesotan Lynn Anderson fired a 6-over par 78 during the final round of stroke play Sunday to reach match play as well, finishing the first two rounds tied for 35th at 159.
Klasse, Woodbury, Minn., opened the championship with a 7-over par 79 Saturday and began her final round on the back nine Sunday by taking a bogey at the par-5 12th to slip to 8-over for the tournament.
Dropping her birdie chance at the 14th, Klasse drew even for the day and would turn at 1-under after converting her birdie opportunity at the par-4 18th.
Klasse’s steady play carried into her back nine Sunday as she would card just one bogey over the final nine holes to card an even par 72 and finish the first two rounds of stroke play tied for sixth at 151.
The three-time Minnesota Golf Association Women's Player of the Year will face Patty Moore, of Charlotte, N.C., during the Round of 64 Monday as the two are scheduled to tee off at 12:10 p.m.
Klasse was eliminated during the opening round of match play last year and also in 2010. She advanced to the Round of 32 in 2013 and reached the Round of 16 in 2011 and again in 2012.
Making her first appearance at a USGA event Saturday, Anderson, Hopkins, Minn., carded a 9-over par 81 before teeing off the back nine during the second round Sunday.
Anderson made bogey at the 12th to fall to 10-over for the tournament before answering with a birdie at the 14th. She would turn at 1-over for the round after a bogey at the par-3 16th.
A double-bogey at the first hole put Anderson at 12-over for the championship but she would answer by sinking her birdie chance at the par-3 second hole. She would card four bogeys over the final seven holes to shoot 78 and finish tied for 35th at 159.
Anderson will now face Denise Martorana, Sag Harbor, N.Y., at 11 a.m. Monday during the Round of 64.
Katherine Moore-Lilly, Minneapolis, Minn., carded rounds of 93 and 91, respectively, to miss the cut for match play.
