Klasse and Layton Advance to Match Play at U.S. Senior Women's Amateur

  SAN MARTIN, Calif. – Minnesotans Leigh Klasse and Ellie Layton advanced to the match play portion of the 2013 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship Sunday after two rounds of stroke play at Cordevalle.

A field of 132 senior women played during Saturday and Sunday’s stroke play rounds before the top 64 women made the cut to advance to match play.

Klasse, St. Anthony, Minn., carded an 11-over par 83 during Saturday’s opening round before finishing Sunday’s round at 4-over par 76 and is tied for 34th at 159.

With a bogey on the fourth hole Sunday, Klasse went to 1-over for the round before back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh put her at 1-under. Klasse made bogey at the par-4 11th hole to draw back to even but with another birdie on the 14th, she again went back to 1-under.

Struggling on the final four holes of the round, Klasse made a triple-bogey at the par-5 15th hole and a double-bogey at the 17th to finish at 4-over par 76.

A year ago, Klasse, advanced to the Round of 16 for the second time in two years. Klasse is a three-time Minnesota Golf Association Senior Women’s Player of the Year and a five-time MGA Women’s Player of the Year.

Ellie Layton, Rochester, Minn., also made the cut to advance to match play Sunday posting a 9-over par 81 on the final day of stroke play. Layton posted an 11-over par 83 during Saturday’s opening round and sits tied for 63rd at 164.

Layton got off to a poor start with a double-bogey to open the round Sunday but was able to stop the bleeding with a couple of birdies and managed to finish the front nine at 2-over par 38.

On the final nine holes Layton quickly cooled off as she made four bogeys and a double-bogey on the first five holes of the back nine. After another bogey at the par-3 16th, Layton would finish her day at 9-over 81.

After an 11-over par 83 Saturday, Brenda Williams carded a 13-over par 85 Sunday to finish the tournament tied for 85th at 168, failing to qualify for match play.

Williams, Minnetrista, Minn., carded four bogeys and two double-bogeys on the front nine of Sunday’s second round before a birdie and six bogeys put her at 13-over for the day.

Layton will face Japan’s Akemi Nakata Khaiat in the first match of the day Monday. Khaiat led the tournament after the first two rounds. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Cordevalle.

Klasse will face Kareen Markle, Meridian, Idaho, in the sixth match set to begin at 11:45 a.m. Monday at Cordevalle.
