MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women’s golf team began the 2014-15 season Monday, playing host to the Minnesota Invitational and after 36 holes sit in eighth place at Minikahda Club.
The Gophers were led by senior Anna Laorr who posted a pair of rounds below par to sit alone in second place at 3-under par 141.
Laorr, Eden Prairie, Minn., carded a 2-under par 70 during Monday’s morning session as she carded three birdies with a bogey on the front nine before shooting even par on the back.
During the afternoon round, Laorr displayed her typical consistent play as she recorded a single birdie with 17 pars to shoot 1-under par 71 and sit in second place, six shots off the lead heading to the final round Tuesday.
Playing as an individual, freshman Sabrine Garrison matched Laorr’s 2-under par 70 during Monday’s early session to record the second best round of the morning.
Garrison, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, shot even par on the front nine with a birdie and one bogey before rolling in two more birdies on the back to finish 2-under. In the afternoon Garrison continued her stellar play with 16 pars and just two bogeys to finish the day in third place at even par 144.
East Carolina University’s Frida Gustafsson Spang sits in the lead after carding a 3-under par 69 during the early round before firing a 6-under par 66 in the afternoon to take a 6-stroke lead into the final round Tuesday.
ECU takes a commanding lead with just 18 holes remaining, leading Purdue University by 19 strokes.
The Gophers also got a boost from freshman Celia Kuenster who fired a 2-over par 74 during the opening round of her first collegiate event Monday, and followed it with a 3-over par 75 to sit tied for 11th at 149.
The final round of the Minnesota Invitational gets underway Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at Minikahda Club.
