SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Posting a 2-over par 73 Thursday, Minnesotan Barb Moxness led a contingent of golfers with local ties during the opening round of the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club.
Moxness, a professional from Edina, Minn., finished Thursday’s round tied with two others and trails first-round leader Danielle Ammaccapane by one stroke ahead of Friday’s second round. Moxness began the championship on the 10th tee and played her opening nine at 1-over par Thursday, eventually drawing even with a birdie at her 11th hole, but a double-bogey at the par-4 sixth put her in the clubhouse at 2-over 73.
Fellow professional Marilyn Lovander, originally from Marshall, Minn., played a steady opening round Thursday with three bogeys over her front nine before posting a pair of bogeys during her inward nine to finish the first day of competition in a tie for 18th at 76.
University of Minnesota women’s golf coach Michele Redman carded an opening-round 77 Thursday and will begin the second round tied for 26th when play continues Friday. Helped by a birdie at the ninth hole Thursday, Redman turned in 3-over par and would card two birdies with five bogeys over the final nine holes to shoot 77.
Former LPGA veteran Karen Weiss, who now resides in Afton, Minn., carded an 8-over par 80 in late April amid horrid conditions at Edina Country Club to earn the lone qualifying spot to this week’s championship despite a 10-year absence from competitive golf.
On Thursday Weiss got off to a rocky start with a triple-bogey on her fifth hole and would turn at 5-over par. A pair of bogeys to start her back nine dropped Weiss to 7-over before carding her first birdie of the round on her 13th hole. A double-bogey would put Weiss at 8-over 79 to finish the first round tied for 47th.
Amateur and Minnesota Golf Hall of Famer Leigh Klasse fired a 10-over 81 Thursday to finish tied for 65th along with longtime Macalester College golf coach Martha Nause, as well as Alexandria, Minn., native Lisa Grimes.
Betsy Aldrich, Minnetonka, Minn., carded an opening-round 87 Thursday and will begin second round in a tie for 108th.
Tee times for the second round of the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Open are slated to begin at 6:30 a.m. Friday at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club.
