LAKEVILLE, Minn. – Despite taking the lead three different times during the final match of the 2015 Minnesota PGA Match Play Championship Friday at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club, Matt Norgaard needed 19 holes to defeat five-time champion Don Berry.
Norgaard earns his first Minnesota PGA Match Play Championship, while Berry has dropped the final match in each of the last four seasons.
Norgaard, Somerby Golf Club, defeated two-time champion Brent Snyder, 1-up, during Thursday’s semifinal round to advance to the final match.
Berry, Edinburgh USA, needed 19 holes to get past two-time champion Jeff Sorenson before facing Norgaard during the final match Friday.
During the championship match, Norgaard birdied the third hole to take an early 1-up lead, but Berry would answer with a birdie of his own at the sixth to square the match.
Norgaard rolled in his birdie opportunity at the ninth before taking a bogey at the par-4 11th hole to lose the hole and his 1-up lead. He would take the lead again at the 14th with birdie, but Berry responded by winning the 15th, rolling in his birdie chance.
With a bogey by Norgaard at the 17th, Berry would take his first lead of the match but carded a bogey on the final hole before Norgaard would clinch the match on the ensuing hole, winning his first Minnesota PGA Match Play title.
The final match was scheduled to be played Thursday following the conclusion of the semifinal round, but inclement weather suspended the final match after 14 holes and the match resumed Friday morning.
