Schmitz Fires 67 to Take Lead at MPGA State Public Links

  MEDINA, Minn. -- Defending champion Sammy Schmitz carded an opening round 67 Saturday at Baker National Golf Course to take the lead at the 2013 Minnesota Public Golf Association State Public Links Championship.

Schmitz will carry a two-stroke lead over Trent Peterson into Sunday's round. Schmitz won the tournament a year ago, posting an opening round 6-under par, and went on to shoot even par 72 on the final day to defeat Chris Meyer by a stroke at Ridges at Sand Creek.

Peterson, who claimed the title in 2006 at Valleywood Golf Course, finished Saturday's first round at 3-under par 69 and by himself in second place.

MPGA State Match Play runner-up Jordan Hawkinson sits alone in the third place after shooting an opening round 2-under par 70, and will start Sunday's final round three strokes behind the leader.
