Strong Finish Gives Johnson First-Round Lead at Mid Public Links

 ANOKA, Minn. – Coming off a second-place finish at the Minnesota Senior Open two weeks ago, Joel B. Johnson carded a 4-under 67 Saturday at Green Haven Golf Course to take the early lead at the 2021 Minnesota Public Golf Association Mid Public Links Championship.
 
The newly-turned senior played his opening 12 holes in 2-over Saturday before carding an eagle and four birdies over his final six holes to take a one-stroke lead over Chris Tollefsrud heading into Sunday’s final round.
 
A slow start for Johnson Saturday, taking bogeys on each of the first two holes before carding his first birdie of the round at the par-4 seventh to turn in 1-over. Johnson would bogey the short par-4 12^th before quickly rebounding with an eagle at the 13^th.
 
He would card three consecutive birdies beginning at the 14^th and would add a final birdie at the last for good measure to secure a one-stroke lead following Saturday’s opening round with a 4-under 67.
 
Johnson opened the Minnesota Senior Open with a 2-under 70 before a final-round 71 to finish four strokes behind professional Mario Tiziani June 2 at Keller Golf Club.
 
Tollefsrud played his opening nine in 1-under Saturday before carding three birdies with one bogey during his inward nine to finish one shot back at 3-under 68.
 
Topher Baron and Nick Jarrett each carded rounds of 1-over 72 during the opening round Saturday and will begin Sunday’s final round five shots back of Johnson.
 
Tee times for the final round of the 2021 MPGA Mid Public Links Championship begin at 11 a.m. at Green Haven Golf Course.
