Extended Season Boosts Golf Rounds in Minnesota in 2024

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – Defending champion Troy Johnson took two steps closer to repeating as Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Players’ champion Tuesday as Johnson won his first two matches of the tournament at Brackett’s Crossing Golf Club.
Johnson, Rush Creek Golf Club, defeated Jesse Bull, 3 and 2, at Island View Golf Club to win his second Mid-Players’ title, with his first coming in 2009.
Tuesday Johnson made quick work of Ryan Brockhaus, Brackett’s Crossing, to win 6 and 5 before slipping past Scott Threinen, Somerby Golf Club, 3 and 2 during the afternoon session. Johnson is in search of his second straight title and now faces J.B. Randall during Wednesday’s quarterfinals match.
Randall, Chaska Town Course, downed Paul Martin, Creeksbend Golf Course, 4 and 2, during Tuesday’s opening round and advanced to the quarterfinals after cruising to a 5 and 4 victory in the round of 16 over Jake Witham of Keller Golf Club.
Last year’s runner-up Jesse Bull will face J.T. Johnson in quarterfinal action Wednesday as Bull defeated Ryan Nelson, Golden Valley Golf and Country Club, 2-up, before edging Dick Hall, Minneapolis Golf Club, 2 and 1.
Johnson, Valleywood Golf Course, advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals after beating Brent Lexvold, Valleywood Golf Course, 4 and 3, then went on to beat David Morgan, Mendakota Country Club, 4 and 3, to advance.
Sammy Schmitz, champion in 2012, made it through the first two rounds of play Tuesday as he defeated Tom Heidrick, Valleywood Golf Course, 2 and 1. Schmitz, Valleywood Golf Course, faced Bob Cavanagh, Perham Lakeside Golf Club, during the Round of 16 and went on to win, 2-up, to advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Andy Jacobson, Eagle Creek Golf Club, earned a spot in the quarterfinals as he edged Tony Vincelli, University Golf Club, 3 and 2, during Tuesday’s opening round. Jacobson then went on to defeat Philip Mahal, Legends Club, 3 and 2, to reach the quarterfinals.
Quarterfinal action begins Wednesday with tee times starting at 8:02 a.m. at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville, Minn. The semifinal rounds will begin after the conclusion of quarterfinal play Wednesday.
