December 23, 2024
COON RAPIDS, Minn. – A pair of early birdies Saturday to begin the 25th Twin Cities Championship fueled Matt Witham’s round as he carded a 1-under par 71 to sit on top of the leaderboard after the first round of play at Bunker Hills Golf Club.
Witham will take a 1-stroke lead over Sam Foust as the venue shifts to Keller Golf Club for the final round Sunday.
Witham carded back-to-back birdies to begin the day Saturday before taking bogey at the par-4 eighth hole to turn at 1-under. He would roll in birdie at the par-13 12th, getting to 2-under for the round, but took a bogey at the 17th to finish the day in the lead at 71.
Foust, a member of the 2016 national championship team from the University of Oregon, overcame a pair of early bogeys as he rolled in a birdie chance at the fourth hole to get to 1-over for the day and would add a second birdie on the final hole Saturday to get back to even par, one shot off the lead heading into Sunday’s final round.
Alex Case and Maxwell Telke finished the first round tied for third at 1-over par 73, while University of Minnesota golfer Justin Doeden and recent Minnesota Golf Association Players’ champion, Trent Peterson, will begin the final round tied for fifth after rounds of 2-over par 74.
The 25th Twin Cities Championship concludes Sunday as tee times are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. at Keller Golf Club.
