IOWA CITY -- Katie Elliott of Wisconsin shot a 72-73--145 Saturday at the University of Iowa's Finkbine Golf Course to grab the 36-hole lead in the Hawkeye Invitational.
Emme deGroot of Tennessee-Chattanooga was second, two strokes behind at 147 (72-75), and Kameron Carter of Longwood University was third at 148 (73-75).
Two more Chattanooga women -- Kelly Brotherton and Christine Wolf -- were tied for fourth place at 149. Considering that they had three players in the top five, it was no surprise that the Lady Mocs were leading the team standings going into Sunday's final round.
They had a combined 598 for two rounds, compared with a 611 for second-place Wisconsin. The host team from Iowa was third at 620.
Minnesota was ninth in the 13-team field, with a 651.
The Gophers' Paige Bromen shot a season-best 76 in the first round, but slipped to an 80 in the second, at she was in 19th place with her 156. Her closest teammates -- Emily Brand (82-82) and Mary Narsizi (78-87) -- were nine shots behind her at 165.
Jeana Dahl shot 79-79--158 for Wisconsin and was tied for 22nd place.
Hillary Gerster, the freshman from Andover who has been the No. 1 player for South Dakota State from the beginning of the season, is just ahead of the Gophers' Bromen, at 155 (77-78).
