Manning has worked behind-the-scenes as a supporter and proponent of organized amateur golf in Minnesota for nearly three decades. She was instrumental in the development of the Minnesota Women’s Public Golf Association, including having served the players’ association as a board member, vice president and president. She regularly serves the game as a rules official and tournament volunteer for several players’ associations, and as an ambassador encouraging a better knowledge of the rules. In 1991, Manning was elected to the USGA Women’s Regional Affairs committee, where she was a vocal advocate for women’s golf.
The St. Peter, Minn., native retired from a 30-year career in medical research in 1997. Late in her career she was diagnosed and successfully treated for breast cancer. This experience and her passion for golf led her to found the Golf for the Cure (golf’s answer to Race for a Cure), and she now serves as the program director for Golf for the Cure? Minnesota-Susan G. Komen Foundation. She is also an advocate of junior golf and is actively involved in the junior golf program at the Brookview Golf Course, Golden Valley.
