BRAINERD, Minn. – Helped by carding six birdies during the opening nine holes Tuesday, the twosome of Rick Hauch and Paul Meyer tallied three more birdies over the final nine holes to shoot 9-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead at the 58th Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Classic at Madden’s on Gull Lake.
Hauch and Meyer will enter Wednesday final round with a slim lead over the pairing of Joel B. Johnson and Blake Onkka, who combined for an 8-under 64 during their opening round Tuesday.
Starting on the 10th tee Tuesday, Meyer sank back-to-back birdie chances on the first two holes before Meyer and Hauch both carded birdie at the 13th to move to 3-under. Hauch contributed by rolling in his birdie at the par-3 14th and the two would wrap up their opening nine at 6-under with back-to-back birdies by Meyer at the 17th and 18th.
Hauch would card a third consecutive birdie for the team at the par-4 first hole and the two would finish their opening round on top of the leaderboard following Meyer’s birdies at the sixth and eighth holes as the two combined for a 9-under 63.
The twosome of Ryan Conn and Hunter Rebrovich posted a 7-under par 65 Tuesday and will begin Wednesday’s final round in a share of third place with the team of MGA Players’ champion Andrew Israelson and partner Nate Deziel.
