PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – A round of even par 71 for Ben Sigel leads a group of five Minnesotans following the opening round of the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship Monday at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Playing his first round of stroke play at Pebble Beach Monday, Sigel carded a pair of birdies against two bogeys during his opening nine before taking a pair of early bogeys to begin his inward nine.

Carding back-to-back birdies at the 15th and 16th holes, Sigel moved back to even par for the round, but would record a bogey at the par-3 17th. Sigel would birdie the par-5 18th hole to pull even after one round of play and sits tied for 28th.

Sigel, of Deephaven, Minn., qualified for the championship a year ago at Riviera Country Club, but was unable to advance to the match play portion of the tournament.

Getting off to a rough start at Pebble Beach Monday, Ben Greve carded a bogey and double-bogey on his first two holes before drawing even with three birdies over his final six holes of his front nine.

Greve, a two-time Minnesota State Open champion, stumbled early on his back nine by carding three bogeys over his first six holes, but would finish on a high note with a birdie at the 17th to fire an opening-round 73. He will begin the second round of stroke play in a tie for 73rd.

Will Holmgren, from Plymouth, Minn., and Parker Reddig, a native of Minneapolis, Minn., both carded rounds of 3-over par during Monday’s first round of competition. They will begin the second round of play tied for 104th.

Thomas Lehman, son of former University of Minnesota golfer and 1996 Open champion, Tom Lehman, carded an opening-round 82 at Pebble Beach Monday and finished the first round of play in a tie for 295th.

The 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship continues Tuesday with the second round of stroke play beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday’s field of 312 players will be trimmed to 64 as the opening round of match play will begin Wednesday.
