Established in 1977, the MGA/PGA Cup Matches pits the top playing amateurs (representing the MGA) against the top playing professionals (representing the Minnesota Section PGA) in this friendly, yet competitive, Ryder Cup-style competition. It is an honor to be selected to represent one of the teams as it reflects upon one's exceptional play from the previous year. There are many individuals who have represented both teams during their career, including Dave Nordeen, Bill Israelson, and Dave Tentis.
In 2012, the MGA Amateurs surprised a strong PGA team at Woodhill Country Club by winning both the Singles and Four-Ball matches 12-8 for a convincing 24-16 victory. This held true within each division as well. The MGA Seniors outdueled their PGA counterparts 4.5-3.5 while the MGA Women did the same, winning 6-2. Even in the Regular Division, where the PGA often dominates, the MGA men won 13.5-10.5.
The MGA victory breaks the PGA's four-year winning streak and gives the MGA their fourth win in the past ten years. Despite their victory, the MGA still trails in the overall competition 26-8-2.
