Consecutive "Others" Prevent Holmgren from Advancing in PGA/Korn Ferry Q-School

Consecutive

One of the Cardinal Rules of tournament golf is Don't Compound Your Mistakes, meaning don't turn your bogeys into doubles -- or even worse.

It would appear that Van Holmgren violated that rule a couple of times down the stretch during the third round of the First Stage of the PGA Tour/Korn Ferry Q-School. As a result, despite shooting three rounds of 2-under-par 68 at Lake Caroline Golf Club in Madison, Miss., he won't be moving on to the Second Stage.

More than 1,000 players started the four-stage Q-School process in the Preliminary Stage during September, and the vast majority of those guys can really play. That explains how Holmgren could shoot 68 in the first round at Lake Caroline and be tied for 29th place in a qualifying tournament where only the top 21 and ties advance. (There are 13 sites where First Stage qualifiers are being played this month. The goal for everyone in the Q-School series is to make the Final Stage, which will be played in Ponte Vedra, Fla., in December, and finish in the top five. Those top five -- and ties -- will get status on the PGA Tour for 2025.)

Another 68 in Round 2 moved Holmgren up to a tie for 21st. He was going along pretty well on Thursday in Round 3, 2 under through 15 holes, and headed -- seemingly -- for another 68. But then, out of the blue, he made two "others" (a double bogey or worse) in a row. First, there was a triple bogey at the 495-yard, par-4 16th, and as if that weren't bad enough, he followed it with a double bogey on the 223-yard, par-3 17th. The resullt was a 73, which demoted him into a tie for 44th, pretty much wiping out any chance for him to advance.

Holmgren, who is on the exclusive list of seven players who have won the Minnesota state high school, State Amateur and State Open championships (Pat Sawyer, Clayton Johnson, Dave Haberle, John Harris, Chris Perry and Trent Peterson are the others on the list), made a nice try at getting back into contention for the top 21 on Friday. He birdied the fourth, fifth and sixth holes in Round 4 at Lake Caroline, but he bogeyed the seventh and didn't make another birdie until the 11th. The 6-foot-8-inch Holmgren -- he has the distinction of being the tallest player ever to have full status on the Canadian Tour (2023) -- bogeyed the 14th hole and ended up with another 68. That gave him a 72-hole total of 277, which turned out to be four too mamy and put him in a tie for 37th.

Meanwhile, in Albequerque, New Mexico, two-time Minnesota State Open champ Andrew McCain didn't really come all that close to advancing. McCain, who has the record for most addresses listed by a Minnesota State Open champion (Minnesota, Florida and most recently, Nashville, are just three of of them) opened with a 74, then shot 72 and 73. He closed with a 76. That added up to 295, which was nine too many and put him in a tie for 52nd.
