STILLWATER, Minn. – On the heels of a top-3 finish at the St. Louis Women’s Championship on the ANNIKA Women’s All-Pro Tour last month, University of Florida sophomore Addison Klonowski fired a 1-under 71 at Indian Hills Golf Club Tuesday to earn medalist honors and a spot in the 2025 U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Klonowski will travel to Bandon, Ore., to compete in her second U.S. Women’s Amateur, set to be played Aug. 4-10 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
“This is such a great tournament against the best players in the world,” Klonowski said Tuesday. “I’ll have some other teammates there as well, and I’m looking forward to competing at the highest stage in amateur golf.
“Advancing to match play is the goal, but I just want to enjoy being out there because it’s always such a well-run tournament.”
Cruising with a pair of birdies over her first five holes Tuesday, Klonowski was slowed by a double-bogey at the seventh and followed it with a bogey at the eighth to turn in 1-over for the round.
“That shook me up a little bit,” Klonowski said. “After I finished nine, I had a different mindset and knew I could fire at the pins a little more. My putter started to work on the back side a little bit.”
Klonowski quickly rebounded by sinking a 15-footer for birdie to draw even for the day before a two-putt birdie at the par-5 12th to return to red figures.
Wedging her approach inside of three feet at the 15th, Klonowski capitalized on her final birdie chance to reach 2-under for the round.
A three-putt bogey at the last gave Klonowski a round of 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory and a spot in her second U.S. Women’s Amateur.
“I would’ve said my putting was working well up until the last hole today,” Klonowski said after qualifying Tuesday. “My ball-striking was good, I gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities. That was pretty key on this course.
“Pretty confident coming in, but you can’t get your expectations too high because it’s only one round and anyone can shoot low.”
Klonowski, who hails from Naples, Fla., previously qualified for a pair of U.S. Junior Girls’ Amateur Championships before qualifying for the 2023 at Bel-Air Country Club, shooting 76-71 to miss the cut for match play by three strokes.
Closing out her freshman season with the Gators this spring, Klonowski finished tied for 24th at the NCAA Division I national championship, the best finish for a Gator freshman 20 seasons.
Joining Klonowski in Oregon next month is University of Minnesota golfer Isabella McCauley, who survived a four-way playoff with a birdie on the second playoff hole to claim the second qualifying spot.
“The last two weeks I’ve been in prep mode for this,” McCauley said. “My game has felt good, but it’s always a good confidence boost to play well in something like this. I try to go into [USGA events] thinking that every day is a new day a try to put a good round out there. I would be really excited to make match play and win a couple matches.
“I knew I had to birdie 17 or 18 coming in, which was a little frustrating after bogeying 16. Definitely a whirlwind needing a birdie to get into a playoff and then needing a birdie to win the playoff, but that’s the fun part about competitive sports; you kind of hope for moments like that.”
McCauley started with a birdie on her opening hole Tuesday, but would turn in 1-over after taking back-to-back bogeys at the sixth and seventh holes.
Converting a 20-foot bender at the 11th, McCauley drew even for her round, but squandered her chances late by taking bogey at the 16th.
McCauley rallied late with a birdie at the 18th, sinking a 4-footer to force a four-way playoff at even par 72.
Hitting her approach to two feet at the second playoff hole, McCauley tapped in for birdie to claim a spot at her second U.S. Women’s Amateur over the past three seasons.
“I headed into the playoff with a new mentality and got a fresh start. With multiple people in a playoff, you never know what’s going to happen, so I wasn’t overthinking anything or putting too much pressure on myself.
“I felt like I was hitting good shots and felt like I had nothing to lose at that point. There was no playing for par or playing conservatively.”
McCauley will make her sixth appearance at a USGA championship next month, qualifying for three U.S. Junior Girls Championships (2019, 2021, 2022), the U.S. Women’s Open (2021) and a pair of U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships (2023, 2025).
Iowa State University’s Pimkwan Chookaew finished as first alternate, while Gopher golfer and recent MGA Women’s Amateur Match Play champion Reese McCauley finished as second alternate.
Last season, Rianne Malixi, a 17-year-old from the Philippines, became only the second player to win U.S. Junior Girls’ and the U.S. Women’s Amateur during the same season. Malixi defeated 15-year-old Californian Asterisk Talley, 3 and 2, at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., in a rematch of the U.S. Girls’ Junior a month earlier, which Malixi won, 8 and 7.
Since opening in 1999, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has played host to eight USGA championships, and following this year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur, the USGA has committed to 11 more amateur championships during the next 20 years, beginning with the Walker Cup in 2028.
The David McLay Kidd design, which will stretch to approximately 6,300 yards during play next month, most recently hosted the 2022 U.S. Junior. This season is the first time Bandon Dunes has hosted the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
