Pedersen and Ullan Card a 62 on Day Two at MGA Four-Ball, Trail Rexing and Rouleau by Three

LAKE CITY, Minn. - Carding a 9-under 62 Tuesday at The Jewel Golf Club, Jacob Pedersen and Max Ullan paced the field during their opening round of the 63rd Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

Pedersen and Ullan will begin Wednesday's final round three shots back of University of St. Thomas teammates Owen Rexing and Zach Rouleau, who tied a tournament record with their 12-under 59 on the first day of play Monday.

“It was a solid day, keeping it in play and getting it on the green,” Pedersen said. “Whoever was putting first usually made it. I think we could finish a little bit better, but following a 59 is tough. They could play great again and we can't do much about it but do our thing.”

“There were a lot of holes that we both had birdie looks today,” Ullan said.

The top 14 teams, plus ties, from Monday's first round, along with the top 22 teams, plus ties, from Tuesday's second wave of the opening round will now advance to Wednesday's final round of play.

Pedersen, a former University of Minnesota golfer and Ullan, a graduate of Washburn University each tallied three birdies during their opening nine, along with a bogey at the par-4 fourth to turn in 5-under for the championship.

Ullan converted his birdie opportunity from 10 feet at the 10th before Pedersen took his turn by rolling in a 4-footer at the 12th to put the two at 7-under for the round.

After dropping his birdie putt from 30 feet at the 14th, Pedersen watched Ullan tap-in at the 16th for his fifth birdie of the day to put the team into the clubhouse in second place at 9-under 62, three shots back of the lead.

“I didn't play great at [the U.S. Amateur],” said Pedersen, who carded rounds of 73-83 last week at Hazeltine National Golf Club to miss the cut for match play. “Took a little break, but came in here knowing you have a teammate and you're not counting your own ball for 18 holes. Kind of nice and can free it up to try and make a bunch of birdies.”

“I played well at the [Minnesota Public Golf Association State Public Links Championship] this weekend,” Ullan said. “Nice to get a little confidence boost coming in.”

Pedersen teamed up former Gopher teammate Brock Winter at the championship last season at Pebble Creek Golf Club, posting a 7-under 65 to share the opening-round lead with 2020 champions David and Mike Christensen before finishing fifth with a final-round 72.

Rexing and Rouleau combined for eight birdies and two eagles during their opening round Monday to match the Christensen's mark of 12-under 59 during the opening round of the 2020 championship at Crow River Golf Club.

The Christensens would card a 5-under 66 during their final round to earn a seven-stroke victory.

Isaac Ahn and David Fong carded an 8-under 63 Tuesday to earn a share of third place with Brett Benson and Trent Peterson, as well as the father-son team of Austin and Mason Eaton, who posted a 63 during Monday's opening round to four shots off the lead.

The final round of the 63rd MGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship gets underway at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday at The Jewel Golf Club.
