Rose Is Medalist/Qualifier for U.S. Senior Am in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS -- Jerry Rose birded three of the first seven holes at Elmwood Golf Course on Monday in the Sioux Falls Qualifying for the U.S Senior Amateur Championship, and went on to shoot a 3-under-par 69. That was good enough to make him the medalist by four shots, and since there was only one spot available, he got it.

Rose, a two-time former Resorters winner, has been the MGA Senior Player of the Year five times, including last year. At age 64, he won the MGA Senior Players for the third tiime, tied for second in the State Senior Open, and he and partner Jim Lehman were the low senior duo in the MGA Four-Ball, and they were second in the State Senior Four-Ball.

On Monday, the long-hitting Rose was in control pretty much the whole way. He birdied the 524-yard, par-5 second hole. A bogey at the par-3 fourth was offset by a birdie at the 400-yard, par-4 fifth, and he added his third birdie of the nine at the par-4 seventh. Two more birdies, at the par-5 10th and par-4 11th holes made his bogeys at the par-4 13th and 14th holes just about irrelevant, and he capped off his round with a birdie at the 508-yard, par-5 18th.

Harry Roberts, who was playing out of the Missouri Golf Association, finished second with a 73. He is the first alternate.

Rob Dewit and David Henry, both shot 74, but Dewit got the second alternate spot.

The Senior Am will be played Aug. 24-29 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

This is the fourth time Rose has qualified for the U.S. Senior Am. He was a quarterfinalist in 2018 and made the Round of 32 the following year.
