ELK RIVER, Minn. – In search of her first win of the 2025 season this week, defending champion Linda Goodno opened the Minnesota Golf Association Senior Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship with a victory over Shelly Kasperek Tuesday during the quarterfinal round at Elk River Golf Club.
A consistent Goodno pulled away from Kasperek by winning three early holes during her back nine to earn the victory, 4 and 3. Goodno will face Lynn Anderson when the semifinal round begins Wednesday.
Stringing together wins on four consecutive holes helped Anderson cruise to an opening-round victory over recent MGA Senior Women’s Amateur Four-Ball champion Tracey Donesky, 3 and 2.
Extending her lead over Donesky to five after winning the 11th, Donesky made a late charge by winning the 12th and 13th holes to pull within three.
Anderson would reach the semifinal round after closing out her match against Donesky at the 16th, 3 and 2.
Building a 4-up lead after nine holes during her match against Mary George Tuesday, Alison Hurley closed out her opening-round match by winning the 10th and carding a birdie at the 13th to advance, 6 and 5.
Hurley will face 2011 champion Brenda Williams during the semifinal round Wednesday.
Williams bounced back from an early deficit during her match against Adele Peterson, winning the third and fifth holes before extending her lead to two by winning the par-4 ninth.
Claiming the first two holes of the back nine, Williams’ lead swelled to four, but Peterson would counter by winning the 12th.
Williams, a two-time runner-up at the event, advanced to the semifinal round after winning the 13th and 14th holes to claim the victory, 5 and 4.
