The 123rd MGA Amateur Championship marks the first time the state amateur championship has visited StoneRidge Golf Club, though the club is no stranger to championship golf. In 2019, Trent Wilcox went wire-to-wire to win the MGA Senior Amateur at StoneRidge, holding off a final-round charge from 2017 champion David Haslerud with three birdies over his last six holes to claim his first state title by two strokes. StoneRidge also hosted the 2022 MGA/PGA Cup Matches, the annual team competition between the state's top amateurs and the professionals of the Minnesota Section PGA that dates to 1977. The professionals claimed a 27.5–12.5 victory, snapping a string of consecutive wins by the amateur side dating to 2014. In addition, the golf club has hosted numerous USGA qualifiers, including local qualifying for the U.S. Open and qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Amateur.
StoneRidge opened for play on July 4, 2000, on farmland in Stillwater. Unlike many of the state's championship venues, StoneRidge is a daily-fee course open to the public, and it has consistently ranked among the top public-access courses in Minnesota, including recognition from Golfweek as the best public course in the Twin Cities.
The golf course architect is Bobby Weed, a former apprentice to Pete Dye who served as the lead architect for the PGA Tour's TPC network of courses. Weed crafted a links-style layout with rolling bentgrass fairways framed by native fescue, rustic and irregular bunkering, and large, undulating greens that offer a variety of challenging hole locations. Playing to just under 7,000 yards at par 72, the wind-exposed design offers a distinctly different test than the tree-lined parkland courses that have traditionally hosted the state amateur.
