STILLWATER, Minn. – Playing inspired golf just a week after earning a spot in the 2026 U.S. Amateur next month, recent South Dakota State University golfer Tyler Seeling carded an opening-round 8-under 64 at StoneRidge Golf Club to take a four-stroke lead at the 123rd Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship.
“Playing some good golf and coming off the playoff really gave me some confidence,” said Seeling, who survived a six-way playoff to claim a ticket to his first USGA championship last week at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club. “Played out here on Wednesday and then did my normal practice at home to get ready.
“I hit a lot of shots in close and made a couple of putts along the way. I hit every single green today—that definitely helps.”
When the championship resumes early Tuesday, Seeling will carry a four-stroke advantage over 2025 Mr. Minnesota Golf finalist and Team Minnesota member Collin Ramos into the second round.
Playing his opening nine holes in 3-under Monday, Seeling continued his momentum to the inward nine by playing his next four holes in 5-under, helped by his eagle from eight feet at the par-5 11th.
Sitting at 8-under for the day, Seeling took a step back with his first bogey of the round at the 16th but rebounded by converting one final birdie chance from 12 feet at the 17th to finish one shot shy of the course record at 8-under 64.
“I just hit a lot of good shots and made it easier on myself,” Seeling said. “I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing. I don’t need to put any more expectations on myself, they’re already high. Happy where I’m at—game feels good.”
Ramos, who will begin his freshman season at the University of St. Thomas this fall, got help from an early eagle during his front nine Monday to turn in 1-under before settling into his round on the back by converting three birdie chances over his final six holes to move up the leaderboard and into sole possession of second place, two shots back.
Bryce Hanstad, winner of the 2007 championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club, tallied a 3-under 69 Monday, despite carding a pair of bogeys over his final four holes. He will begin the second round tied for second with 2025 MGA Junior Boys’ Player of the Year and 2025 Mr. Minnesota Golf finalist Sam Udovich.
“Starting to hit the ball better the last handful of weeks,” said Hanstad, who most recently claimed back-to-back wins at the MGA Mid-Players’ Championship in 2022 and 2023. “Putter’s been a struggle, so it was nice to roll a couple in today. Hit it a little closer than I have been, so those putts were a little bit easier.
“It was tough—windy and hot. Two different nines with the difficulty of pins on the back and add in a little extra wind. Solid overall, but I’ll have to stay pretty patient. Felt like I got caught pressing on a couple swings that resulted in some bogeys. Stay steady and use some experience.”
The second round of the 123rd MGA Amateur is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at StoneRidge Golf Club.
