SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda – Frankie Capan III, winner of the 2020 Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship, tallied a final-round 70 Sunday at Port Royal Golf Course to finish tied for third at the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship for the best individual finish of his career.
Capan entered Sunday’s final round three shots off the lead in eighth place, but carded a pair of bogeys down the stretch on a blustery final day of competition, claiming his third top-10 finish of the season.
A native of North Oaks, Minn., the 26-year-old Capan birdied two of his first five holes to start the final round Sunday, moving to 11-under for the championship.
Rolling in his birdie putt from 30 feet at the 11th, Capan improved to 12-under and pulled within one shot of eventual winner Adam Schenk’s lead, but Capan failed to get up-and-down to save par at the par-3 16th and followed it with a second straight bogey at the 17th to finish two shots back at 10-under 274.
Posting the lowest 54-hole score in 21 seasons, Capan earned a two-stroke victory over Andrew Israelson at Edina Country Club by shooting 12-under 204 for the first state win of his career, leading to MGA Men’s Player of the Year honors.
Capan began his collegiate golf career at the University of Alabama before transferring to Florida Golf Coast University for his sophomore season.
During his rookie campaign on the PGA Tour in 2025, Capan started 27 events and made 10 cuts to amass more than $1.1 million.
In just his second start this season, Capan placed 12th at the American Express in Palm Springs, Calif., in January but would struggle by missing cuts in seven of his next nine starts.
Capan partnered with inaugural CRMC Championship winner Jake Knapp to finish third at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April for the first top-5 of his career.
After missing the cut at the first fall event of the season, Capan carded a 17-under 271 at the Sanderson Farms Championship early last month for his second top-10 finish of the season.
Currently sitting 124th in the FedEx Fall standings with one event left on the schedule, Capan needs to finish inside the top-100 to keep his Tour card for the 2026 season.
Holing his par putt from inside of six feet at the 18th hole Sunday, Schenk held off Chandler Phillips to earn a one-stroke victory for his first win in 243 starts on the PGA Tour.
“Unbelievable. Was really hoping this day would come at some point in my life,” Schenk said following his win Sunday. “Never really know if it is. That's what makes the journey so amazing, interesting, and it's a surreal moment when it finally does.
The 34-year-old former Purdue University golfer makes a massive jump to improve his status for 2026, entering the second to last tournament of the season 134th in the standings before earning his two-year exemption on Tour and moving to 67th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings.
"Eventually you get it done or you don't, and I'm only going to have so many more of these opportunities, especially if I would have lost in a four, five-man playoff and still end up having to go to Q-School.
“That was just a massive putt for me to make [on No. 18], a massive putt to have go in. It's somewhat life changing. It's life changing I get two more years on the PGA Tour. I feel like I'm playing the best golf of my life that I ever played.”
Players finishing outside the top-100 of the FedEx Cup Fall standings, will earn conditional status for next season and can earn or improve their status for 2026 through Final Stage of PGA Tour Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, with the top five players earning their Tour cards for 2026.
The final event of the 2026 PGA Tour season gets underway Thursday at the RSM Classic in Sea Island, Ga.
