WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – Strangers until they became roommates at the University of Minnesota just weeks ago, Gopher senior Luisamariana Mesones and freshman Regan Dusenbery combined to shoot 5-under 66 Tuesday at Southview Country Club to earn medalist honors and a spot in the 2027 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
Mesones and Dusenbery will compete at the national event May 15-19 at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Va., where Mesones will be making her third appearance at a USGA championship, while it’ll be a first for Dusenbery.
“I just want to enjoy the moment, probably with our families there and enjoy the trip,” Mesones said after qualifying Tuesday.
“Since it’s in the spring, it’s more time to spend with a senior before she leaves,” Dusenbery said.
Despite a bogey on their opening hole Tuesday, Mesones and Dusenbery birdied three of their final four holes of the front nine to turn in 2-under for the round.
After Dusenberry chipped in for birdie at the 11th, Mesones countered by converting her birdie opportunity from 12 feet at the 12th to put her and Dusenbery into a share of the lead at 4-under.
A tap-in birdie at the par-5 17th lifted Mesones and Dusenbery to a round of 5-under 67, edging the team of Amanda Jacobs and Gretchen Johnson by one stroke to claim the lone qualifying spot.
“Pretty solid round—I feel like I made birdies on the holes that Regan didn't make birdies and she made birdies in the holes I didn't,” Mesones said. “We just came from a tournament [with Minnesota], and we room together, so we started a good bond from that.”
“The chemistry we had was very comfortable,” Dusenbery said following the round. “I didn't hit it great today, but I feel like I was able to get up-and-down. It seemed if she had a good hole, I had a bad hole, so we alternated well. Good chemistry and a lot of fun.”
Mesones, from Trujillo, Peru, entered her senior season with the Gophers this fall after earning All-Big Ten Second team honors during her junior season, finishing 23rd at the Ann Arbor Regional in May.
In 33 career events at Minnesota, Mesones holds a scoring average of 72.81 with a trio of runner-up finishes.
Dusenbery, from Wichita, Kan., finished as runner-up in 2023 and 2024 at the KSHSAA state tournament before capturing medalist honors in 2025 by nine strokes. She holds her high school’s single season record with a 70.8 scoring average.
Jacobs and Johnson, both from Portland, Ore., finished as first alternates, while University of St. Thomas teammates Amelia Morton and Nicole Reineke finished as second alternates.
Opened in 1929, the Fred Findlay designed course will host its first USGA championship next spring, previously hosting a number of Virginia men’s and women’s amateur championships.
The site of the club originates back to 1758, and Thomas Jefferson designed plans to add to the original house in 1802.
